Urban Legends exhibition powered by 999Contemporary

Stefano S. Antonelli

Urban Legends wants to ride the comparative way between french and italian urban art trough the work of the twelve most representative italian and french artists. It promises to be an event of global participation, turning Rome into the world capital of contemporary urban art. Urban legends also brings street art in museum venue or the first time in Italy. Many of the invited artists are already legends, others are preparing to become one. This exhibition brings a decade of experience portraying contemporary urban art on a museum level and brings back, after a long time, a movement that expresses itself through large painting. There will be over 2000 square meters of exhibition space divided between separate indoor and outdoor areas.  The outer area of the complex, a former slaughterhouse, is prepped for an “artist calling”, which will allow younger artists to showcase their works side-by-side with the street art giants along with workshops, lectures, music and food from June to August.  The show will cover not only street art exhibitions showing at the museum, but also the action from the Spagna Metro station and the Roma-Lido train. Street art is a creative movement that emerged from the underground with many contradictions and in spite of these, street art established a unique relationship with everyday people bringing art among the people with a popular language and a sampled imagery. The new generations are speaking to us through this practice to create, show and share their languages. For over five years, 999 Project has been engaged in the cultural mediation needed to improve the potential of this artistic and social movement. With over 30 major works within the city of Rome, Ostiense neighborhood, has been called the Italian “street art district”.  Bridges, underpasses, and whole nodal centers of the city have been transformed and returned to beauty and livability, all funded exclusively by 999Contemporary.  This project aims to bring to Rome some of the most important personalities of this alternative artistic system.  Its has become a cultural phenomenon within the last decade, bringing together the masses of the planet to involve them in the construction of a system of cultural values and practices, which I assure you, will become clearly visible. Street artists are now art world rockstars.  They have global, intense, appreciative followings, the sign autographs, they have been able to use the internet as a loyal, unbiased manager to spread their vision to the masses.  But creativity and art are two different things. 999 project began as a critical methodological path to distinguish the creative from the creators. This exhibition will present twelve creators who have been able to gain a huge audience with only the strength of their work and an internet connection. Through language, techniques and imaginary visions, they are united by the belief that there is only one essential place for art: the street.
